1997 Yamaha GP1200 - will only go 45 mph
My waverunner will only go 17 mph when I first start it and go. If I open the throttle too much, it will shut down. If I press the primer plunger a couple of times, it will go faster and continue to run faster; BUT top speed is only goes 45 mph. It seems to run fine at 45 mph, but I know it should be able to go around 60 mph. I saw some gunk in the fuel filter, so I changed it out (still runs slow). I ran some brake cleaner through the ON/RES fuel valve and it seems to be clear of obstructions. I have not checked compression or anything else. Any ideas?

If your primer is connected to the same line as the line you are trying this run-up on, try switching the fuel selector to the selection that your primer is NOT hooked up to. My yamaha SUV will only go 35 if it is in the Reserve selection because that is where the plunger is plumbed into. Immediately upon changing it to the "ON" position I go full speed 51. If this is the case on your's, one option is to change the location of the primer and put the main "T" in line right after the carbs on the fuel return line.
