    FZS vs RXP fuel consumption

I used to own a pair of modified RXP's. I sold them and eventually got a 2011 FZS. Today, my wife and I made a 68.5 mile loop, taking it easy the whole time. We usually ran about 35 mph, with one or two blasts up to maybe 60. Anyway, as the buzzer came on just as we finished the trip at 68.5 miles (per gmaps pedometer). According to some posts here, the buzzer comes on when you've used 16 gallons. That math comes out to a dismal 4.3 mpg's. On that very same trip riding more aggressively, I've hit 5.5 mpg's on my old '04 RXP, with 6-6.5 being easily achievable. That's a 30% increase in fuel consumption!

What gives? Has anyone else made this switch and observed the same?

I found the following reports on boattest (all numbers at 35 mph):

    FZS - 5.02 mpg (http://www.boattest.com/boats/boat_v...96#Test-Result)

    RXT - 5.7 mpg (http://www.boattest.com/boats/boat_v...03#Test-Result)

    RXT-X - 5.15 mpg (http://www.boattest.com/boats/boat_v...04#Test-Result)

    RXP - 12.82 mpg (http://www.boattest.com/boats/boat_v...30#Test-Result)

Yea, the RXP numbers are very wacky, but just comparing the FZS to the RXT shows the RXT has nearly a 15% advantage. The RXP, as far as I know, has a lighter hull with a more efficient pump, so it should do even better than the RXT.

I'm just a little discouraged because the FZS hull first appeared to be more efficient than the RXP because it goes a few mph faster with a few less hp. But I guess that doesn't stand at cruise.

Edit: I just noticed that the RXP/T WOT fuel consumption is around 17 gph, but the FZS and RXT-X is around 20.2 gph. This imlies the Yamaha mill is actually putting out around 255 hp rather than the published 202 hp "estimate". This kinda explains it because they are getting the top speed using hp rather than hull/pump efficiency.

More cylinders, larger displacement, increased consumption.

Mike, I never had an RXP so I can't help you there,
but I can confirm the RXT and the FZS are very close on fuel in my experience.

I've had my buzzer come on with 8 gallons left in the tank on my FZR. IIRC, it came out to about 5.2 mpg with a lot of WOT. Another thing to consider is the Yamaha runs on regular unleaded.

Gas guages are not that correct.
You would need to fill her up to get the exact gallons used.

Re: FZS vs RXP fuel consumption

Last time out, I ran 45 miles, and had 3 bars left. Alot of 75mph runs, with done nice 40-50mph cruising. The Vipec and ET15.5 have actually helped my mileage a ton. Although I think it is mostly the Vipec.

Thanks for the input, guys. Guess I need to fill it up to get an actual number. Sounds like the low-level buzzer isn't that accurate.

FZR are really bad in fuel economy i used to have a fx140 and i used to ride all day with the 16 gallon gas tank, now i ride half day with my fzr and most of the time cruising at about 30 to 40 mph. I was hopping that with a few mods i will be doing better but it's the same fuel consumption.

Fuel buzzer/gas gauge are pretty inaccurate in all skis, don't go by that as others above me posted. That said, I have noticed that the s/c Sea Doos are a little better on gas than the fz/shos in my circle.
