Fine tuning/adjusting the timing- how much to tear down?

I rebuilt last year with oversized pistons, and seeing an even 100 compression across the board. Since they're all the same, but low, I figure the timing is off; possibly one whole tooth. I rebuilt with the crank and cam locks in, and the three cam bolts are sitting about in the middle of the allowable range on the cam sprocket.

I'd like to loosen the three bolts and advance/retard, and test which way the compression starts coming up. The problem is, when I loosen the bolts, the cam still doesn't want to move because of the tension in the chain. To take out the chain tensioner now would require a fairly extensive teardown, including taking off the intake mani. I remember reading of other people making quick adjustments and checking the timing... what's the secret?

lift the intake and pull the tensioner....less than 15 min.

    pull the intake
    pull the valve cover
    pull the spark plugs
pull the intake hose off the supercharger
use a 17mm socket on the supercharger to turn over the engine
drop the cam locking tool in
you should be able to drop in the crank tool with a little wiggle if its right
if you can't get the crank tool in, loosen up the cam gear bolts and rotate until the tool drops in
lock down the cam gear bolts and you should be good to go
I usually spin the engine over a few times to verify that both tools will drop in before I button everything up

if you need to jump a tooth you will need to remove the tensioner

As far as testing with the chain on the current tooth... since I originally timed it with the cam/crank locks in before, couldn't I just test advancing/retarding by loosening the three cam bolts, turn the socket on the supercharger bolt, then tighted the cam bolts down? Shouldn't that be safe, since it's only got a few degrees it can move either way? Thanks!

You think timing is off, you think possibly a whole tooth. You should verify your timing before you start adjusting. If you actually are off a tooth you could get yourself into a situation of bending a valve. just my 2 cents
