    '96 ZX1100

Looking at a zx1100. Guy says it starts up pretty easy. just looking for a ski to complement my boat. What kind of things should I look for and is this ski worth picking up for the right price.

Those are fun 'Skis, but make sure it has the 'nose bowl' on the front of the hull! This was a safety mod that Kawasaki had a recall about. At about 60 MPH, the 'Ski would suddenly just flip over. This was triggered by the air induction system that gave the hull too little water surface to support it.

You can easily spot the mod, it's a funny looking fiberglass bowl, perhaps 10 inches across, that's glued to the front of the hull below the water line. I don't know if the parts are still available or not. Check with your local dealer. If it doesn't have it and you can't get the parts, don't buy it. It will eventually hurt you.

Otherwise, check the oil lines for cracks and security, and plan to replace them due to age. Remove one of the cooling water hoses that go to the front cover of the stator (under the oil pump) and gently blow through it to check for blockage. I've found a couple that were plugged up.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any pictures of this nose bowl? Was this issue for all zx1100's or just the 96's?

No, I don't have a picture of it. It applied only to the '96 1100 models. In '97, the 1100 was not re-introduced until about July, i.e. the end of the season. Dealers were pretty upset because it was a big seller, but Kawi couldn't stand the bad publicity and possibility of lawsuits.

If the 'Ski has one, you'll know it because it looks like it doesn't belong there.

Thanks for the info. Apparently this has never been done to the ski I'm looking at, and I don't really want to mess with trying to find the piece and installing it. Sounds best to avoid it altogether.
