    Burning smell after backfire

Well I decided to start up my xl1200 after installing a S3 stinger, and a TDR, just to see how it sounded. At firt it started up, but revved real high. I lowered the idle a bit, seemed ok, but only ran for a second, because its a loud mutha. I decided to try again after a little while, and it seemed real hard to crank, then maybe like 3 cranks later...Boooom. I immediately smelled a burning smell (not familiar) and seen some brown smoke. Im guessing there was an air leak or something somewhere, because all the water hoses werent hooked up, spark plugs were a bit loose also, and one clamp on my coupler was loose. After letting it settle, pulling the plugs, and bumping it a few times to make sure everything was free, with everything tight, I tried it again. Now its just cranking, It sounded like it was going to turn over for a second, but I didnt want to push it. So question is, What could have caused this, and how much damage did I do. I have stock reeds, so If anything they are probably smoked. Would my ski still start if they were bad?

It was definitely getting fuel, the plugs were wet when I pulled them.

if your shooting for 70 like your signature says the tdr and the stinger wwre both proven speed losses on the xlt back in the day. You may very well lose 2+ on the top.
My ported efi xlt thats in the mid 70's has both stock water box and stinger;0)

If you blew the reeds let me know I have a stock set handy.

Not concerned with speed if the ski wont start. Second, I realize Im not going to break any speed records on an XLL. I will change my sig for you

Will do tomorrow. I didn't have any water lines hooked up to the exhaust, that's where I'm suspecting the air was from. It makes sense, because when I first started it, it revved super high, like it was real lean.I immediately shut it down. Well see tomorrow, well, if I did trash the reeds, now I have a reason to go VF3's now..haha. I was just a little concerned with the brown smoke/smell from the backfire.
