GSX-L 97.5 White Engine, stay away or..

    Hello.
Total newbie but I am plowing through the site searching for info.
(Living in Sweden skis here are pretty expensive, so pls dont compare prices to the US.)

I am looking at buying a GSX-L 97.5 and the seller says its a 787 engine with 130 hp and its white...
I havent looked at it yet but I suspect its actually the 947 white engine.

    My questions:
Is there a hull number or something where I can identify the production year (the ski has been repainted) ?
Since I havent seen any engine live, how can tell if its indeed a 787 or other engine (compared to the 947) ?
It is still possible to get spareparts for the "white" 947 ?

Is it a "general" recomendation to keep away from the white one ?

    TIA.

The 947 white motor itself is typically fine, but you are looking at a machine that would be 14 yrs. old. The problems are the jet pump complete assemblly, bearing carrier and drive shaft-- maintance items, carberators, throttle cable, choke cable, manifold to pipe gasket, pipe mounting, water routing, fuel lines and system and starter bendix.

All these problems can be addressed using 98+ 947 parts, but you have to know what you are doing as there is no manual for mixing and matching parts from other skis.

And almost all the white motor parts are obsolete from BRP, so you would have to find a dealer who has them in stock or by them used.....

The other problem is that the white 947 is different than the grey 947, cooling is different carbs are different, lots of stuff is different....

    Thanks for all replies.
I will go and check the ski out and see what type of engine it is.

Talked to the seller today, he claimes that its a GTX 97 Limited with 787 and 130 hp - Something doesnt add upp...
Also the ski has no VTS ? Doesnt all 97 GTX have VTS ? According to the hull# it's a 1997.

I suspect is not a limited GTX but a "normal" one with 787, but should that have VTS ?
I will go and see the ski on saturday.

VTS wasnt added to the 3 seaters till the RXTX in 08...

Sounds like you have a regular GTX with the 800(787) motor....Good motors....

And no offense to Jim's post, but if you fix all the things he says are problems with the ski you would have been better off buying a brand new ski!!!!! WAY to much money to invest to fix all those "issues"

1 day of time and $800 or so in new and used parts-- sell off the the original good 97.5 parts on ebay for $500 or so. Not that big of a deal-- this isn't my first 947/951 rode. If you were to take a 97.5 to a dealer and tell them you wanted done what I suggested, I agree the price would be VERY HIGH-- $2-$4K I would guess-- and most likely not done correctly with problem after problem at every attempt to ride the machine... I repair quite a few machines that were "fixed" the week or DAY before

But I do agree that the newer 4 strokes are actually a very good deal-- price for what you are getting, but make sure to get a GOOD as the the repair costs can be staggering.

97.5 GSXL-silver and red hull, white 951. 97 GTX green and white hull, 787. 98 GSXL red hull, silver 951. 98 GTXL maroon and white hull, silver 951. I have heard the white 951 is much more powerful than the silver.
