Getting a little more speed out of the R&D 300 Plate..

Happy Holidays Gents...worked on a project during our off season..I believe there's a little more top flat water speed left on the Ultra, without having to go into engine or ECU internals...
I gave the rideplate a 6 step aluminum sanding and polishing job giving it almost a mirror finish and taking out casting bumps and roughness..this I believe might give the ski .5 -1 mph faster as you ride mostly on the plate at WOT...this is a theory for now as I won't be able to test till April...

ID:	288983Here are the tools I used if anyone wants to try this...if you have exp. polishing casted aluminum then you can follow your own steps as there are a few ways and tools...
    orbital sander (10,000rpms)
    standard electric drill (2500rpms)
    sanding disc 120/180/220 grit
    2 polishing wheels
    brown compound for abrasion
    white for shine/finish
    water/paper towels
    eye and breathing mask protection

photo on left is plate just off the ski..in the middle is after 3 step sanding...on right is after compounding and final finish...

Even if you can squeeze out 4/10s of a mile..its less than a $20 project not counting the power tools and does not alter the angle of the Plate affecting rough water hook up or ride...

You will see some gain but while your at it you can gain some more by truing it/removing imperfection, even if the plate is stepped the less hook you'll have the faster you'll go

I've done that and trued it at the same time plus some angling mod on my 260x 2 years ago and gain 3mph but it doesn't last long, after a while i've drop back 1mph, then have to buff it again unless you keep buffing it at least every 20 hrs it will fade out and come back to it's original texture. a good wax ones in a while keep it shiny longer

    Thats some shine Francois!..nice gains

The R&D plate is stepped and angled quite a bit over stock..wouldn't want to touch the angle by grinding the raised bosses on the other side
I could have used those small buffing cones around the skegs...

no i don't mean the bosses, if you put a strait edge on the side and on each step of the plate, you'll find out some curve/hook, mine was bad,it don't take much to create a drag

Getting a little more speed out of the R&D 300 Plate..

Why go to all that trouble just coat it with a couple coats of epoxy and it will be as smooth and shiny as you could' ever want

Yes truing the hull on my GPR with a 4ft edge brought out bumps that I sanded down...as for truing the plate thats something I will definitely look into...

if you're just looking for speed there's better plates that you wont have to polish

Because epoxy doesn't remove the imperfection it only cover it and when it get scratchy you need to sand and polish anyway
