    1997 Sl 1050

I'm looking at a 1050 that has an electrical issue. The owner said a repair shop told them it needed a new harness/ main cable that runs through the engine. But you have to take apart the motor to replace it. Any idea what the shop is talking about? Asking price for the ski and trailer is $350 with clean title. Any help would be appreciated.

To do a complete ignition upgrade on that ski is about 350 for parts. If you are good turning a wrench, go for it. There are plenty of us here to help you along the way.

Is this a common problem for this model ski?

Yes it is. The update kit corrects it. The new style ignitions are very reliable.

If this is accurate, they may be talking about a fried ground wire. While the entire harness may not need replaced, the stator is likely fried, and as Bryan said, it is probably needing the ignition upgrade...... If the ground wire is fried, that will need to be replaced along with the ignition upgrade....

I had this same ski, and the stator was bad. I had done a lot of checking with my meter and found a short in the stator, so I cut the shorted wire which in turn made it into a 2 cylinder, BUT the engine started right up at least. That's when I learned about the recall Polaris had on a batch of bad stators, unfortunately mine was too old to get one. Cost me like $300 and I had to pull the front of the engine apart to change it. Never had a problem after that.
