    Computer help/Question

My laptop died yesterday, Some file that is needed at boot is corrupted or missing. Says I can the put cd-rom in and use repair to fix the problem. The problem is I have no cd that came with computer. Will any XP install disk work? If so anyone got one I can look at. I don't want to buy a new install disk since I got my eye on a new Vista machine in the near future and I already have a XP license for that machine. Lot of stuff on that machine I haven't backed up lately. Any thoughts or help?

    Question

Need more info on your laptop to properly diagnose your issue. What brand? What file is missing or corrupt? What O/S r u running? So you don't have a copy of the O/S? You should always be able to boot from CD-ROM by entering the BIOS Menu at start-up.

Its a Dell running xp pro. I now get the

    "A disk read error occured
    Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

When I try to boot up. Yesterday it was some settings file.

Ok I just ran the diagnostic and got some error code, looked it up and its something about bad sectors on the hdd. Guess I got to replace it. Have to hook the hdd to another macihine and try to retrieve the data.

If you can't get a restore disk from DELL, pic this up to save your info...

Dell has security settings embedded that will usually detect copies preventing any restore attempts. Do what Danny sd & see if you can get a restore disk from Dell & then you should be able to bypass the HDD & boot from the O/S disk. I'm assuming it's no longer under warranty???

Once you get it back up & running back up your important files & get a new HDD. You can get a small/cheap one for now until you decide to purchase a new laptop.

    Keep us posted,

Well that's certainly one way to solve your problem. Probably a better option too depending on the age of your laptop.

    Congrats,

Well yes and no. I was planning on a new laptop but was saving for one of the new ultra small ones with the 12" screens. About $400 more than the one I got. Dell was 3 years old and I only gave $400 for it since it "fell of a truck".

Fell off a truck. No wonder the HD crashed. I have a Dell XPS, actually got it for my wife, with a 15" screen. She likes it but this is the one I want:

www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1210?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs Saw this in person at the Dell store in the mall and it's nice and compact. This is def the one if your mobile, my wife's XPS is better off stationary.
