    951 spark issues

I have a 2001 XPL that died while riding today. I did the usual checks, (compression, fuel and spark) and found that while cranking the motor, I was getting no spark. However, when i released the start button, the plug would fire once or twice (depending on rotations of the motor).

I disconnected the smart cable but that did not help. I changed MPEM's and that did not help. All fuses are good and earth connections seem okay. The only thing I can think of is it is the trigger unit in the mag housing.

Am I on the right track or is it something else.

After checking all earth connections, I seem to be getting no spark to the Mag cyl and only get a spark to the PTO cyl after releasing the start button.

    Any ideas?

It sounds like the starter is robbing all of the current. I think if the trigger was bad you would never get any spark at all. I have a small wheeler that is doing this exact same thing and it is driving me crazy! Good Luck Cliff

Have you opened the black box up and checked that the coils are getting a good ground (earth).
You have 2 coils and they are earthed via the same mounting bracket.
    Check this first.
Have you cut back your spark plug leads by10 mm and re screw the spark plug cap back onto the lead so as to give a positive connection?
You have resister plugs fitted BR8ES ? R equals resister

I just did that and it seemed to be the problem. Can't really be sure as the battery has now gone flat. But it gave me a good boot, so things are looking up!!!

I run BR9ES as it is a twin piper.

Thank you for your help (once again). Are you located in Sydney?

It may sound weird but check your stator pickup. My 01 xpl did basically the sesame thing as yours.

After playing around with it turned out to be the pickup mount had broken where Seadoo bends them to mount. And you can't get the mounts separate. Good thing is the pickups are the same on the 787 and 951 if you have a test machine or donor.

    Hope it helps
