Those are Flex Pipes...Stainless steel, 2-ply, hydroformed pipes...

The history on those are they are part of the flex bellows used on automotive exhaust systems. My father designed them for his company, who makes the parts for many of the cars and trucks on the road today...

What you see is actually 3 parts in one...Each flex area is formed in a hydro machine, they cut into 3 equal parts....Next, it is machined with stainless braid and flanged to be part of the exhaust system. Its purpose is to absorb vibration between the engine and the rest of the exhaust, which under vibration from the motor, will make the rest of the exhaust system vibrate like a big tuning fork. This makes the inside of the vehicle BOOMY and annoying.....

This setup can be found on the old Jpipe. If anyone has taken it off, and looked under the heat shielding, you will see the braided line. Look inside and you will see a flex bellow...Years ago, back in 2005-2006, BRP actually contacted him for a replacement setup. Even though he submitted a replacement, they went with another simpler setup, which turned into the midpipe...

The pipes you see we took right off the production line, some that were even tossed in the scrap pile because they were too short (short 2-3mm on one end, so they won't cut evenly into 3)...We added a stainless ring on the end, POPPED it into place creating a ridge for the clamp...At the time many people were building their own XS IC kits, and pipes were tough to get just right. These pipes could be bent in any direction you want, even pushed and pulled to length, and HOLD their shape...You could bend the pipe to get that extra inch of swing, so the coupler would line up better and not bend...They flowed perfectly just like a regular pipe....

Unfortunately these pipes are no longer in production. With many automotive motors being downsized, large diameter bellows are not needed. They make smaller ones now, to small for our application...We can't get anymore of that pipe...Those pipes were production units on several GM cars, with those units going into the Pontiac G8 and some GM/GMC heavy duty trucks. Mostly the 6.2L motor.....

I still have a flex pipe on my ski, on the exhaust side, from the waterbox to the outlet (which is on the side in the opas area...) Makes it easy to connect...
