    Riding in New york State

New York carries a law requiring its riders to have some kind of boaters education. Is this a standard Coast guard class that can be taken anywhere? I visit my family in Buffalo every summer & plan to tow my jetski from Fl. I would like to be legal. I'm sure my FL reg. # & sticker will be a big target for local law enforcement to see if I am certified.

    boater ed class

I noticed that it doesn't list NY as a state with a course. My 14 yro
took the FL one and needs it to be in compliance in FL.

Most states let you ride any boat or PWC after about age 16 with no courses.
Courses get you lower insurance rates, and of course some knowledge!

    Jim,

If you have a certificate from the CG Auxilery that should be enough. The Ex got a ticket last year for not having the cert on the ski.

Be sure you have the cert with you along with the other equip, fire ext, wistle, flag...

    NY State

I know my wifes cousins who used to own a couple of wave runners sold there skis because of the law. They used to hang out on Lk Ontario but were fined one weekend because even though they were certified, a friend who came up for the weekend was not, and was pulled over.

    Steach,
Thanks for the info, I knew they required something, you would have to believe they would have to accept a CG course from any State.

Not in NY, operation of a PWC (at any age) requires that you have a valid cert "in your possession". For info try here:

    NYS Parks, Marine Services Unit
    Empire State Plaza
    Albany, NY 12238

    Great info,
It says as long as I am carrying a certificate from the state that I reside in I am cool as long as it is NASBLA approved.
    Cool, thanks for the help.

Where I lived in Western NY the riding was great, would ride from May to September. But that law seems excessive, I think the boat owner should be responsible for there boat. I think it's not a bad Idea for the owner to be certified & to be responsible for whom they let ride...
