    Through hull seals

    Has anyone used bronze bearings with success in the through hull seals? Or should I ask, will they work correctly? I have some here and was thinking of putting together a through hull bearing with these.

    Bronze bearings or bronze bushings?

    The factory parts are Teflon infused bushings.

    My understanding is that the Teflon material gets activated by friction heat and expands inwards to relubricate the shaft surface. Each time the Teflon at the bushing surface wears down the resulting friction heat causes the bushing to self-correct the problem.

    im interested in this too. as i need to build a thru hull bearing set up on a msx hull. i know K447, you think the OEM bearings are teflon infused type (i know the type you mean - with a slit in the cross section, and black surface coating) but i have a bearing carrier off my polaris, and the bearings/bushes look like the oilite type. they are gold in colour (no slit on cross section)

    so i think they oem's could be like the oilite or similar. i could well be wrong. interested to know like BryanP though.

    For reference;

    The MSX hulls are the odd man out regarding through-hull. All other Polaris models use the bushing type seal carrier which 'floats' on the drive shaft using a flexible section of large rubber 'hose'.

    The MSX bearing carrier is a rigid design, bolted to the hull. The internal bearings are actually ball bearings pressed into a rubber "Lord mount' within the large metal housing.

    See this thread for some discussion regarding the actual bushing material in the non-MSX bearing assembly.

    Keith, I know I need to change the wording to exclude the MSX......
