    Sponson Inserts

I recently acquired a factory sponson kit. After installing a set of used sponsons on one of my skis previously, I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the OEM inserts:

The left insert (1/4-20) is what I wound up using for the repairs / final install on my first ski. The middle insert (1/4-20) is the "knurled" insert that spun in many of the holes when trying to tighten the sponson down. The right insert is the factory OEM. Note the OEM also has a thin rubber gasket on the backside of the flange....

I seem to recall that McMaster-Carr had a wide range of insert types.

I do not recall seeing the rubber sealed version, but I do like the look of it.

I like the ones on the left myself.

Those knurled ones seem to slip unless you get extreme pressure on the tool. At least they did for me.

I wish I had a spare OEM insert to do a "destructive" test on. The inserts on the left definitely end up in a better mechanical grip on the hull than the middle ones. The first install tool I had was a pop rivet type. After fighting that, I would up picking up the "two nuts on a bolt" type. Worked much better. Also happens to be what came with the OEM kit......
