1997 STX 1100 Fixed to Variable Oil Pump?
I've read in places you can replace the fixed rate oil pump on the 1997 STX 1100 with a later model variable pump but cannot find anywhere exactly which ski I need to be getting one from...
Can anyone tell me which model is a straight replacement and if there is any further work that is needed?
My problem is I have about a three mile no wake zone to travel through before I get to the open ocean and it's a long smoky ride at 5mph with the fixed rate pump...
Yes I know I can drop the pump and go pre-mix but that's not my first choice...

Pre-mix wouldn't do anything, you'd still end up with 50:1.
The only 1100 engines that had variable ratio pumps were the fuel injected engines, the D.I. models. I thought about doing this on my STX, but the pump was at an odd angle with the original front cover. You would have to make a bracket for the cable, as well as replace the throttle cable with a split cable.
I have a '97 Yamaha Exciter boat with twin 1100 cc engines. It came with fixed ratio pumps. The following year, they introduced variable ratio pumps in the 1200 engines in '98, and would install them in the 1100 engines if customers complained. I complained and they swapped them under warranty. Sadly, it didn't cut down on the smoke.
Try a better (synthetic) oil.
