Exhaust Manifold - what causes this?

Anyone know what is causing this? What can I do to fix it, short of replacing the part? Can exhaust gas leak from this?

Most of the time from running lean. Is your ski stock? Also that's not bad at all no need to address that other than address your engines running condition.

Now relooking at the picture looks like you could have a exhaust leak see how it looks carbonated around the hose and hull once again I can be wrong I like to see the jpipe and better pics

Thanks Shrabber for the reply. It was running lean until last fall when a friend remapped it correctly. Not running lean now.

So you are saying that it is ok as it is? No exhaust gas leak or other problem? I dont need to add some gasket seal or other fix?

Shrabber, I cleaned the jpipe with a wire brush. It had carbon where the jpipe seals to manifold. I also cleaned the part in the photo with a wire brush. You have good eyes to see the carbon that I could not get to with the brush.

If I do have a gas leak, what can I do to fix it without replacing the part?

Lol bad eyes I'm a bat lol. Well your manifold is not going to get any worse so now that you fixed your mixture your fine. Truthfully don't take any more of that carbon off it acts as a seal and in your case it will help more than hurt. If it was forming around the exit then yes but around the seal no. I just reassemble it and check it for leaks my hovering your hand over it while idling.

    Lean is correct...

The bell housing is designed like that to provide structural support for the Jpipe...along with reducing the exhaust gases from circulating around the corrugation in the bellows, heating them up...If you replace it with something, make sure you have the same clearance around the bell or it will lock the jpipe up when it expands with heat...

Hands up if you have a modified craft and actually have all of your Bell???? Never have been able to hang onto mine, even running AFR's on the safer side.
