    02 virage find

I found an 02 virage local for 500 smackers. From the pics the guy sent via text, the ski looks to be in great shape. He said he was told the electrical box will have to be replaced due to a faulty chip. It is fuel injected and he says the motor runs. No trailer.

I have no experience with fuel injected skis. My 01 Genesis is carbd.

    What do you guys think?

I'm going to look at it after work today.

    From ad:

    NEEDS ELECTRICAL MODULE IT'S BAD.

EVERYTHING ELSE ON IT IS IN WORKING ORDER...MOTOR,,,ECT.

    NICE LOOKING WAVERUNNER

I DO HAVE A TRAILER WITH IT I WILL SELL FOR $400 EXTRA.

My guess, based on the above.

The EMM probably needs repair. DFI Technologies charges about $700 to repair these, usually with good results.

Often there are other minor items that typically need attention, including the fuel pressure regulator inside the fuel tank. Straightforward to repair using the info available around here.

Plan to purchase a spare TPS module, which costs a bit over $100. If the TPS is going bad it can cause all sorts of symptoms and mis-diagnosis. The only useful diagnostic is to install another new TPS.

You still need to do the normal due diligence including compression check, hull condition inside and out, broken or missing parts, etc.

Is this a two cylinder engine?

Could be something as simple as the LR module if the owner states that it runs.

I'll have more details on it after I check it out this afternoon. The guy said he picked it up 2 weeks ago and hasnt had time to look at it. He said he picked it up from a trusted friend that wouldn't bend him over on the deal (don't they all say that?).

So $700 to repair that? Holy hell! But that still wouldn't be a bad deal if everything else worked.

Not familiar with the LR module.

The Virage and Genesis models use an electronic module known as the LR Start/Stop module. There are several part numbers depending on the engine type and model year.

The Red Start/Stop button on the handlebar signals the LR module to start or stop the engine. If the Start/Stop module is failing it can become confused and not allow the engine to start, or kill the engine as soon as the Start button is released, or even prevent the engine from shutting down when the Stop button is pressed.

It can be bypassed for testing purposes. My signature link includes the details.

That would be awesome if that's all it is! How much do those cost?

I scored my 01 carbd genesis 1200 for 500 cuz it was running in limp mode and the guy gave up on troubleshooting. I ran it a couple times in 60* water and was getting engine overheat on the MFD. I pulled the exhaust temp sensor connector and off she went. ETS was shot. Completely corroded.

I'll chk your link for the bypass.

I found a start/stop controller on egay for 74. I suppose that is what you are referring to as and LR module.

Beware of used LR modules. There are several variations used on the Virage and Genesis models, and also several part number updates.

If the LR Start/Stop has indeed failed, which is not at all certain, then I suggest you buy new if possible.

Until you can actually do some diagnostics, it is all guesswork.
