What are these bolts (plugs?) for???

OK I'm tearing down my 4tec to rebuild and the shop manual says remove these things, but do you really have to? I'm talking about the 8 plugs in the bottom of the case. The perimeter bolts were external torx and were easy to get out, but these don't seem to serve a purpose, although I know they do... I do see they reveal other bolts. Will someone please tell me what? Thanks.

To split the case's, yes they need to be removed. The main bolts are under those.

Oh, so I have to take the bolts under those out also in order to split the case?

    Yes.
Be sure and get a good bite on the caps and bolts under the caps.
If you strip them your job will become a big PITA.

OK thanks for the advice. I had to bring the motor to my mechanic to get him to get the caps loose. It's ridiculous how those things are torqued on! I'll make sure and get a good hold on the bolts under there. I should really just start a build thread, as I'm sure I'll be asking many more questions throughout this process.

I like to break the seal by tapping a razor blade between the halves with a hammer - after all the bolts are removed of course.
