    looking to buy a 2000 1200XL?

I am looking to buy a used 1200XL waverunner for my wife because she is afraid of my RXP-X and she likes the "water spout". I know little about this ski or two stroke Yami's in general. Do I need the waveater clips on this. From what I read 01 is when they started needing them. is the deck of the craft above the water line painted or gelcoat (there are some nicks I would like to fix). I test rode it and the speedometer said 48 which is not even close to the top speed of the ski, I will have it GPS'd...do those speedometers go bad often? I felt like I was going closer to 60. 48 is pretty slow compared to what I'm used to on the 255. Thanks for any help!

Yes, it is a powervalve engine..you need the clips. About the speedo, it could be freed up a bit with some wd40 if its sticking. Or check compression #s, How is it running? Maybe need a carb rebuild? Those speedos are off anyhow, but usually on the higher side. But 50-55 seems about right for stock

Painted topside, speedo could just have thin weeds wrapped about pin that goes thru paddlewheel. Mine does it all the time, mossy or other weeds slow the paddlewheel down.

if you don't mind, what are they asking for? the XL to me is kind of weird ski. it tents to ride on one side depending on which side the wind is. I recommend to you take it for a ride before you buy it , just cruise at 40 and you will see it will lean to one side.

We have 2 XLL's in the family and I have never noticed them leaning. One has R&D ride plate, the other is stock. Besides, who only rides 40?

take the stock V shape ride plate out and put a r&d plate and the leaning will be gone.

Could also be a sponson issue that's causing the leaning. You still may have the older, recalled ones on there. Mine rides straight as an arrow

i agree 100% with Jim on the plate, but if its all stock it will lean to either side.
