11 years, 370 hours, 7 trophys, finally worn out

I check compression yesterday on the 97. Top speed has been down the last few times I have ridden it. It usually runs 68-69 all day in any kind of weather, and 70 when the conditions are ideal. Here lately 67-68 is all it will run. The compression on #1 cylinder is 142, #2 130, #3 142. This motor has been untouched since 2002, all I have done is rebuilt the carbs. After I sent the motor to Group K in 2002, I worked out of town and had Group K do all the work including the assembly and pressure testing. Obviously they did an incredible job.

It has been the most consistent and reliable ski I have ever owned. I find it amazing to get 370 hours out of a modified 2-stroke. I am glad it showed signs of something not being quite right instead of a crank or pistons failing and causing severe damage. It will be rebuilt, but I am not in any hurry. My GPRXP will keep me entertained.

NO FREAKIN WAY. I guess you could not expect it to last forever.
Well like you said, atleast it did not chunk a rod or piston out the block like I do to my motors.
So after this rebuild, it will be around 2024 before it needs to be rebuilt again?

Group K did a great job on that one. Of course we all know that you take care of your stuff.
    Good going.

I hope I can get another 11 years out of the next motor. My six year old daughter will be 17 and driving by then!

    That's excellent performance.

What type of oil are you running? That may have much to do with your engines longevity.

I have always used Yamalube 2R. It's actually not formulated for PWC, but for 2-stroke motorcycles and snowmobiles. I asked Group K back in 2002 what oil they recommended. They used to do alot of offshore endurance racing and tried several types of oil. They said the motors that ran Yamalube 2R always looked the best internally after inspection. I premixed at 32:1.

I pulled the head tonight. Will post pics tomorrow. Everything looked great considering the hours on the motor. I could still see the cross hatches in the cylinder walls, barely. Piston wash was good although the middle piston was the leanest/hottest. The head gasket was definetly in need of changing.

Hurry up and get one of your skis back in the water. I need someone to ride with.
P.S. I will be in Htown this weekend. I will see if I can prod Rich a little on the GPRXP pump swap.
