1998 Polaris 1050 slhx help - Engine rebuild from a box of parts

    Hey guys,

New here...Just picked up a '98 Polaris 1050 slhx from a guy for $300. Someone failed to winterize it and the water froze and cracked two cylinders. The guy I bought it from bought it as is with the engine tore down and everything in a box.

Just wondering if theres a tear down book or tutorial out there to make it a little easier to put back together being that I wasnt the one that tore it apart.

Any other advice on the project would be appreciated too. Thanks!

    Welcome

LOTS of info available. Start with my signature links, and peruse the Polaris Tech and FAQ sections on Greenhulk.

It will take some time to work through the material, but you should be able to find much of what you need.

The Polaris red carb engines are all 'self-draining' as long as the hull is level or nose high when pulled out of the water. Not sure how there would be water trapped inside the engine unless it was stored nose down or the normal water hose arrangement had been altered.

There is a lot of other stuff that you should be checking over and/or maintaining before your first ride. Near the top of the list is a full scale carburetor rebuild and fuel system refresh. These engines really need the entire fuel system to be 100% good.

If it was me I would be tearing the engine right down and inspecting the crank shaft. Even a tiny amount of surface rust or grit in the bearings will doom the engine longevity when it is running at 6000+ RPM on the water. Unless you are VERY sure that the crank is good, plan to have it rebuilt.

Thanks for the quick response! This is my first Polaris so i'm not nearly as familiar with them as I am Yamaha's. Is there any site in particular that is good for polaris parts?

Yupp crank is rusty too. I found a crankcase and crank with 25hrs on it. Would you trust it or should I just rebuild?

All depends on the actual current condition and the back story. How did the engine fail, how was the engine cared for prior to failure, how was crank stored after the engine failed?

Inspection is key when evaluating a used crank shaft.

If your cases are good, I would rebuild the crank you have.
