Does smart phone GPS work for determining speed on the ski? What GPS unit is a good one to get if not?

Etrex works great is easy to use & read and is easy to mount. They start @ $100. so determining your gps speed is pretty easy to do with the Etrex !

try the search function, there have been a half dozen long debates on the gps topic.

sure a smart phone will work..but the questions is..want to risk losing it?

It's all over the boards but the Garmin 76 is waterproof, floats, and can be had for under $100 on eBay.

I use a water proof casing for my iPhone. Lifeproof. And and an app called Vidometer. You can record videos, gives you your speed, G Force and how high you are from the ground. But on water, it's how deep the water is.

I'm a fan of the Garmin Oregon series. If you get the 450, or better, the screen is very readable in the sun. The 450 can be had for $200 on amazon (refurbished). Of course, you'll still need maps.
