    2001 gp800r

Picking this up as a project for me and my young boys. Trying to get their mindset into to fixing and tinkering. Don't know if this is a bad deal or not, but the trailer looks good and seems to worth the $400 I'm paying for both. The previous owner says it needs a new crank. Can I rebuild the crank myself?

We're going to be doing this slowly (as funds and wife allow). I will try to keep a pictorial diary as things develop. I've been lurking around this site for a while and it sounds like I'll have a lot of support.

No, you should send it to Crankworks.com. They have a good reputation for doing excellent work.

Hello & welcome to the Hulk. Well by the looks of it you have got yerself a project! You got it about as cheap as you could ... the trailer is worth nearly the amount you paid. So where to begin ?? Since you seem to have a lot of time & limited funds ... make the most of your resources by staying glued to this forum & asking for help all along the way. There are several members who have been where you are & really learned a lot and found new skill sets and gradification from doing such a project ... plus it is good time to bond with your kids. Good Luck and stay-n-touch by giving us updates along the way.

Unfortunately this one is gonna cost ya more than the ski is worth. Gonna be a matter if you want to do the investment or not.
Looking at the pics bare minimum.......
    New crank or rebuild
    re nikasil cylinders
    rebuild carbs
    new pistons, rings pins
    new head
    gaskets
intermediate shaft doesnt look to hot either

if i had to take a quick estimate......if you did all OEM new stuff........
    crank I thinks is 600+
    re nick 2 cylinders 400
    carb rebuilt 50/kit plus labor.......200
pro x piston kits would be fine....280 I think havent looked in a while
head find a used one on the forum......or PM WFO.....maybe 50
    gaskets. 100

OK, upon closer inspection, the head is better than it iooks in the picture. No pitting. I'll take pics and post them. I tried to turn the crank but it doesn't want to budge. What else could cause that? I'm going to pull the rest of the motor out of the hull and pull the flywheel cover off. I wonder if there's something in there binding it up. Other than that, I guess it could be the jet pump/impeller? The pistons and cylinders don't look bad, but I'm new to this so I'll take some pics of that too.

It has 2 different pistons and that head looks like it has water ingestion corrosion? the crank ball bearings are probably rusted solid.

The combustion chamber surface is smooth. Will it work if I clean out up with some steel wool or scotchbrite pads? The pistons are different because the cylinders are different. I guess it's been through some previous work. Both cylinders seem to look okay. I'll put up some pics of the jugs so I can get some opinions.
