    Question about main bearings

Got my 4-tec motor completely apart, got it honed, new rings, etc, etc. Well, it's time for reassembly and when I put the main bearings in the case, I know they're supposed to be flush with the mating surface, but there's the smallest "lip". It seems to be about the same on all four of them. It can't be more than .001 above the mating surface of the block. Is this going to be OK or do I need to get those surfaces cleaned up? There's a very small ledge where the thrust washers were and I guess I need to get rid of that too. What is your best advice on this? Everything so far has been within spec including cylinders. Thanks!

Are you installing new bearings? Are they factory bearings? You should plastigage the mains.

Sorry, yes these are brand new bearings. They are factory. I do have some plastigage and I'll use the old bolts to check it.

You shouldn't have to replace the case bolts. I would place 4 pieces of plastigage on the crank and tighten the 8 main bolts to 29ft lbs in sequence then repeat until they are at 41ft lbs, part the case halves - and check the clearances. You might also want to check the balancer shaft bearing clearances while you are there...

When checking clearances with new bearings, what are you looking for and what do you do if you find improper clearance?

You are really checking to be sure your journals are within the service limit. Also - to be sure you were shipped the correct bearings. If you have an improper clearance you might need to replace your crank or case - or get the proper bearings, depending on the situation.

Am I going to hurt those new bearings by cranking down the case with the bearings having that very slight edge above the case?

If you checked the part numbers and verified that you have the correct bearings - you should be fine.

Be sure to check that you have the thrust washers in their correct positions. You shouldn't have to modify your case or bearings in any way!
