    Rebuilding '99 1050...got question

Doing a top end on a 1050...#1 piston wiped out...light hone to break glaze...bore checked out perfect...went ahead and ordered a complete top end kit...anyway, I have all cylinders off and pistons off the rods...the engine is still in boat and hooked up, when I turn the crank by hand I get some resistance...not even all the way around, is this normal....would the pump or oil system put some drag on the crank...thx

The magneto magnets will tug on the flywheel when rotating the crankshaft by hand. Feels like multiple points of 'tension' in each revolution.

The jet pump and driveshaft bearings and seals also provide some rotational drag

That's it....didn't think I had more problems than a scored piston, but when I got all the pistons out and turned the crank I got concerned...will assemble tomorrow with new pistons and rings...thanks...

I use STP to coat rings, pistons and bearings in auto engines during assembly...ok to do that in a two stroke?

A good quality 2-stroke oil will do the assembly job. It is compatible with the engine, of course, and is designed to burn cleanly when it passes through the combustion chamber.

'Four stroke' oil products are generally designed to not burn easily, which is not what you want in a 2-stroke engine.
