    1995 monte carlo starter

Hi guys. Just went to fire up my wife's ski and the starter spins but won't engage. Tried it again and got a big clunk noise. Any ideas? Anybody know of a free exploded parts download?

sounds like the bendix..not a fun repair by any stretch

county cat still sells tigershark parts and they have the parts diagrams there. look under artic cat, then pwc's

with some luck your ski won't have the engine sled that wraps around the mag cover and blocks the bolts ( engine has to come out)

tell em the captain sent ya!

Stator cover is easy to remove on the 640- literally a 15 minute job. The bendix on all yamaha- Kawasaki-Polaris and tigersharks are the same- they all interchange. Only bendix on a 2 stroke that's odd ball is the tigershark triples.

It was fine when I winterized it in October. Is this something that can go just sitting over the winter?

do I have tio even qualify that with an answer?

of course..all sort of shit happens over the off season.

get a wrench on the driveshaft and try to turn the engine if you didn't fog it at the end of last year, you could have a much more expensive problem going on.

with some luck, when you turn the engine just a little, you'll be able to crank it up.

you might have some rust in there, so go pull the plugs and spray some wd 40 down each plughole for staters..let it sit a bit, then get at the driveshaft and give it a turn in either direction ( plugs out)

If it's spins but doesn't engage it prob just rust on the bendix- keeps it from moving out and engaging flywheel. Condensation coming in stator cover will do it. Had this happen several times on sharks. Sometimes you can take the bendix out. Clean it- put white lithium grease on and reinstall.

That's exactly what it's doing. Spinning but not engaging.

Its the bendix sticking. Doesn't take much rust at all to keep it from being able to throw out. 640 and 770 motor has plenty of room in front to get stator cover off-pulled on flywheel and bendix out.

It's the 640 so I have tons of room. Not like my GPRSHO. Lol.

oh it sounds like it engaged..that big clunk was when the bendix ger engaged the flywheel, but the engine didn't turn. what happens now..just more spinning? or nothing at all (nothing at all means the bendix is stuck on the flywheel hence the advice to try to turn the engine) for 60 or 70 bucks for a bendix you would take a chance of getting stuck on the water? I don't get it.
