    Testing a motor

Is there any way to start the motor without putting it into the ski?

well yes, but how to do it depends on alot of factors...

What motor is it? how much of it is there? carburator? exhaust? spark plug wires?

I'm not really an engine expert but theres my 2 cents

I spent an hour considering doing this...and then decided I didn't like the idea so much.

Much easier than you think, it's not going to jump all over the place, you just need to have a good think about what you are going to do if not all go as planned.
