Reverse handle is not locking in forward, does it come apart to fix? 1996 pol sltx

the button on the reverse handle works, but doesnt lock it in forward and the reverse plate can move down some while it is running.

You can take it apart. There is a plastic cap / button in the center of the round part of the handle. Pry that off to reveal a screw which releases the handle from the mount. Take a look at the mechanism from there to troubleshoot.

Thanks bluefish, I will do that. It's hopefully my last quick fix.

I took the handle apart. It looks ok, it just has about an inch of play in the handle. when i am turning a corner hard, the reverse door makes a banging noise, moving back and forth. In the rear, the mechanic showed me that the door would move several inches back and forth with this play in the handle or cable.

Any way to tighten up the door???

You should be able to take up any slack at the handle mechanism. The cable bolts to the bottom of the handle bracket. You should be able to loosen / tighten the nuts at the is connect to adjust the overall length of the cable, if there is too much slack in it...

The handle should lock in the "bucket up" position. If not, you have an issue there as well.....

it locks, but you can still move the handle when locked about an inch. Both my jet ski seem to have this same amount of play in the locked position

Last resort, there may be some adjustment in the thru hull at the jet pump as well. You will need silicone to reseal the hole after you make this adjustment, and it is really difficult to get at with the jet pump installed.....
