So this is similar to an Octane engine but with pork chop crankshaft, correct?

    Doug,
We have built a few of these engines. They run good. You can't tell the difference between the pork chop crank and the full circle in the twin both are pretty smooth. Richie had one that he built for his old SL 700 years ago and took the motor out and fogged it and I think it was morgt15 that bought that one and had it in his hurricane some yearas back. he has one now that he took out of his SLH and he is going to put it in something else. Has twin Keihins 38's with a pump and adjustable hihg and low speed screws. They run great and with a good port job run very well. It is a cheap way to get a 800 crank. Those 1200 cranks are all over the place hurt.....

You are saying they are easily available in used/damaged form?

That is what I meant. There are alot more 1200 cranks than there are 800 cranks so the odds of finding a bad one or one that needs work are better.

So just by taking a set of 700 cases and a 1200 crank and cylinders, you can build a bad ass 800? Pretty sweet!!!!!

Yeah the 700 and 800 cases are the same. And yes with porting they run very well.

well just for simple math...135/3=45 45 hp per cylinder so 45x2=90 hp according to Polaris but the numbers are inflated if you ask me. I would say more realistic number of about 85 hp. You are not making anymore power and this is not a magical combination. Polaris claimed the Octane claimed 100 hp but if you ever look at the dyno sheet on it the numbers are fudged a little. I think you would be happy with a ported 800 twin. They run very well. Oh and at a low RPM you would really only need a 38 but a 40 would work as well. We had one in a Virage on a single pipe and then we put it on the twin pipes that people claimed they would not work but they did work well. But all in all you are better with a single pipe. Less headaches and that little Virage went very well on a single pipe!
