1998 Yamaha 1200 XL lost power

My ski usually has a top end around 60mph. I was riding today and the ski cut off. It started right back up but will only run 45mph. Any ideas where to start? The engine sounds fine it just seems like its "governed". Thanks

    The 98 XL1200 doesn't have power valves.

most likely you lost compression on one of the cylinders.....had this happen to my 98 xl1200 yami......oil pump quit working and blew middle piston to pieces(there's pics on here somewhere)...rebuilt the whole engine (bored over) and rebuilt the carbs and converted to premix...........now it runs like a beast......
