2000 STX DI Engine without an number

I have two 2000 STX DIs, and I noticed last night that on of the engines has a serial number on the block, and the other has no number. The area that it would be is smooth. I am guessing that this means that the engine has been replaced at some point in time. I have contacted an dealer and was told there is no history of any repairs done to either one. Do the blocks you get from SBT/etc have the number removed?
