Rebuild almost done!
After a long, expensive and sometimes aggravating process my engine looks like and engine again.
Must have tools:
Service manual!!!! Most important.
Coupler wrench and engine holding tools...I made it by without but I wouldn't do it again
Rd's timing chain tensioner worked great.
Torque degree indicator thingy.
Extension for dial indicator to find tdc/degree wheel to really nail it down and know where you are during a valve set.
Pen and paper! Right stuff down to keep track when checking lash or tolerances.
Things to watch out for:
Wavy bores! 2 and 3 where ugly, all .020 over now.
Valves scored and worn. Only one of my intake valves came out with out grinding the tip. Exhausts where chewed up around the stem. Replaced with riva valves.
Buy the gasket kit, replace your timing chain (its only $44) especially if you had a clutch tooth failure. I replaced all hardware that Yamaha recommended. While the engine was out I put some water and dish soap in the hull and towed it around behind my quad, looks brand new! Do any fuel pump mods while the engine is out, makes life easier.
Huge thanks to Jerry and josh for putting up with me and getting parts to me as quick as they could. Here are a couple more photos.
