    06 GTX Ltd surging & Less power/Speed

    Hi All.

I've got an '06 GTX Ltd. I just got it out of the shop which did a "Spring Tune-up", oil change, lubricate cable, check plugs, check battery etc.

The shop said it was "running Great".

I put it in the water today, and when took off, the highest RPM's I could get, was 5700, speed of arounf 38-40. It also sounded kinda strange, running rough, and for the first time, I could smell an strong exhaust odor.

I made sure the pump and shaft were clear and tried again. Same results.

But it was surging and the RPM's would occasionally jump up to 7100 and my speed would shoot into the 60's and then go back down.

I thought maybe the fuel injectors were plugged up a little, so I kept trying the throttle wide open and after about 20-40 minutes it all of the sudden seemed to clear and ran smooth and good RPM's of 7100 and good speed.

I went back to shore and let it sit for 20 minutes and when I went out again it started all over again.

So I'm still thinking injectors or bad fuel, or water in fuel.

I'm going to go get some carb cleaner additive tomorrow and see what happens.

Any other ideas ? It just cost be $200 to get it out of the shop and I'm Bummed.

    Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Get some fuel Injector cleaner and run a double dose thru it.
    It sounds like bad/old fuel.
This is a very common issue on the 1 st ride of the year.
Also change the spark plugs after the 1st tank.
Running old fuel thru it can ruin a new set of plugs.
I run Lucas fuel Injector/upper cylinder lubricant in all my skis and cars.

THANKS ! I'll look for some tomorrow.

BTW, I should add I have 103 hours on the ski and have done the change out to metal washer already.

I filled it with premium and added Stabilizer at the end of last season.

Hopefully you did the full rebuild on the s/c..
    Washers and bearings.
I've got a buddy who just changed the washers at 95 hours and at 115hrs the bearings on the s/c took a dump...
He had to replace his flywheel, complete charger and a few other things.
Only doing the washers is taking a big expensive risk...

I just assumed that they did a complete rebuild, but I'll have to ask them if they did or not.

I can't recall how much it cost, but I seem to think i was $300 for the re-build.

    Thanks

When you say "Double Dose", do you mean double the directed amount in the same tank of fuel ?

Do you think I need any "dry-gas" as well, or will the Lucas Injector cleaner do it all ?

Do these skis have an intercooler? How does the oil look?

Yes, these have intercoolers and oil looks fine.

Well... immediatley after I poured the injector cleaner into the tank, I came down with pneumonia. Hence my absence for several weeks.

I am recovered enough to do a few things. Yesterday, I finally put the ski in the water to run it to get the injector cleaner thru the system.

When I first started it up, it was still running rough with a strong smell of gas/exhaust or similar. I could not get past 4800 RPS and it would "surge" several times. After running it for 15 minutes, it kept "surging" more frequently and finally, it took off at full speed and idles good with no odor. I could jump out of the hole at WOT anf got up to 68MPH.

But when I went back to the dock and shut if off and let it sit for 5-10 minutes it would do the same thing all over again.

I repeated this same process over and over again. Every time I shut it down for a while and started it up, same problem that would clear up after running for 20 minutes or so.

Someone suggested that it could still be stale gas or the injectors aren't cleaned out yet.

But I am not convinced of that theory. If it's stale gas, I wouldn't think it would run that good not matter what.

    Fuel Pump problem ?

I'm stumped and looking for more ideas. I would rather avoid having to pull it take it to the shop if I can.

HELP ! Thanks a lot for any ideas.
