Ok...see my thread about bad piston in a 1050...ended up being a main bearing...picked up a low hr (52) 96 sl900 today...guy fried the electronics by switching battery leads...got engine ready to come out of boat, heads off and cylinders look great... several questions..
    1. do i pull the crank and put into my 1050 case...if so should I pull off the coupler or just use the one on the 900 crank...
    2. use the 900 bottom end and put on my cylinders and all other ancillary items...
any other thoughts would be appreciated....thanks...

I *believe* the 96 900 and the 97 1050 share the same crank, case, and rods. If someone can confirm this, and the 900 is as clean as it sounds, then I would drop all your 1050 ancillary (one of my favorite words by the way) items on that and use it. Yes, you can use the 900 drive coupler for the 1050 setup.

I talked to Richie Sharp today and he said the 96 900 and 97 1050 SLTX use the same cases, crank, and rods. No difference. Put 1050 bore pistons on and you should be set. Check that one cylinder good though with all the shrapnel that bearing has been throwing around. Make sure you spec everything out....cylinder wall/piston clearance, ring end gap......etc.

I think crazy covered the basis, make sure you are using a good hone, and also even though Polaris allows up to ten tho for the service limit on piston clearance, don't do it!,6.to 6.5 is as loose as you want to run that motor. Otherwise that piston will rattle like crazy and you stand a good chance at breaking a skirt. But do as you want just hate to see you tear it down again, after you clean that crank case, make sure to oil it up, by turning the crank by the rods and have someone putting some oil down the main bearing holes, as you turn the crank the bearing get a nice coat of oil.

Thanks...I did all that when I did the first top end...I was suprised how close the wsm piston weight...all 3 were within 2gr of each other...what is the purpose of the angled down hole in the skirt just below the rings...
