    GPR Electrical help

2000 GP1200R, 185 hours. A couple of weeks ago, I went to start my ski up. It had been 2 weeks since I had started it last and all was fine then. I went through my normal routine. Hit the switch for 5 seconds and let off when it did not immediately start. Ski turned over just as always. Strange thing was that I heard a "click" from the electrical box when I let off the switch. Got that sinking feeling. Went to hit the button again and nothing, dead. Hit my bildge switch and heard it spin like always. Checked the fuses, and all ok. Hit the button again, nothing. Unplugged the battery, let it sit for a minute, plug back up, nothing. Today I pulled the electrical box to expose the starter relay. Connected the battery and put the lanyard in, crossed the posts on the relay with a screwdriver and she turned over just like it did when it was new. What concerns me is that I did NOT have to hit the start button, it fired up without it. If even fired without the lanyard in. I traced every wire and all looks well. I did not have a volt meter with me so nothing I could check for. Logic and dealing with Ford's from back in the day makes me think I have a bad relay.
Yes, I'm a cheep bastr#d, but do I go ahead and replace the relay, or should I check elseware first?

    Relay

I had the same thing happen on my friends 760. You can jumper the wire around the relay to double check. If starter fires over than the relay is bad. It was easy to replace.

    Relay sounds bad.
When you place the screwdriver across the relay terminals you are basically jumping the battery across the starter motor.
None of the other items such as start/stop switch or lanyard will effect the ski.

Order a new Starter relay and go riding.

I know Im the odd ball here, but "IF" you say it started without the lanyard in by jumping the relay. I would say you might want to check your kill switch.

If your able to start without the lanyard that tells me the kill is being bypassed. If thats the case then it might be giving a kill signal even when the lanyards in place. Just a thought. They are more prone to wear than the relay.
