I have actually seen this happen. I bet your red with purple stripe wire for the CDI is plugged into the red/pur terminal.
There was a service message to move that CDI power wire to the orange terminals.

By unplugging the stator connecter-you are disconnecting the CDI ground, shutting off the CDI.

the red/purple ? from cdi to orange or from stator/from breaker to the orange wire.

tried hooking up the orange to cdi and it turns on the bilge and wont start at all, only way we can get it to fire is unhooking and reconnecting the r/p wire

I ran the red/purple wire coming from the cdi to the orange power strip and it does not run in that configuration

Its the red/purple with the bullet connector from the CDI that you unplug from the red/purple stator connection and connect it directly to the board at the orange terminal.

Maybe post a pic of what you have.
You did make a jumper wire correct ?

The only wire that gets disconnected is the red/pur directly out of the CDI. All other red/pur need to stay in place. The jumper wire will go directly from the CDI red/pur to the orange terminals.
The voltage regulator supplies 12v to the orange term's when engine is cranking or running. And also when you press the bilge pump button.
By moving the CDI power to orange-it literally turns on and off the CDI-by controlling the volt reg.
You will need more than 10.6v while cranking on that orange/red/pur. If voltage is too low (weak battery ), it will not have spark.
