Virage 800 i Vs Virage 1200 TXi - Bendix failures

I have 2 Virage 800 DI and both have had the bendix come apart and wreak havoc. Is it due to the 2 cylinder running rougher than the 1200 3 cylinder?

What are the Pros and Cons of the 2 motors? Did Polaris make more of one than the other?

The 800 seems to be a lot easer to work on that's for sure.

It does seem that there are more three cylinder Virage TXi around than 2 cylinder Virage i. However, that may not reflect actual manufacturing quantities, which I do not know.

Why did the Bendix gear assemblies fail? Rust? Excessive wear? Other damage?

If the original Start Solenoid (black plastic with metal backing plate) is still present, these are known to fail internally. If they get stuck in the crank mode (even with your finger not pressing the Start button) then the starter keeps the Bendix engaged even when the engine is running. This causes extreme wear and stress on the Bendix and the starter motor, leading to rapid failure.

If you still have original start solenoids, replace with the more reliable current version. See my signature links for more info on how to tell which version you have.

The 2002 has just 30 hr on it so it is a babby. I did score a newer design flywheel on ebay last night for a total of $165. They started using them on the 2003 and 2004 right. I'm wanting to keep 2 TXi with all the better stuf on them like the new flywheel circuit breakers etc. It seems that the newer ones with aout the big elc box are a lot neater inside.

Maybe the flywheels are not as bad as I thought and it is the solenoid that is the problem.
