    Polaris 780 SLX 1996 - testing CDI

I rebuilt engine and was finishing up wiring. Test fired machine and it ran great. But think I grounded out the CDI.

    Now I'm getting no spark.

What is the proper way to test the CDI? Also, if a replacement is needed, any suggestions where to find one?

    well..about time you posted! Congrats.

I would like to have better news for you...

the cdi cannot be tested, the only actual test of the cdi unit is a swap with a known working unit.

if you "think you grounded it" you likely popped it. Check all the fuses with an ohm meter.

they are hard to come by and when you can find one, they are pricey

go thru basic troubleshooting (sig links) cause stuff like a start/stop switch problem can prevent the ignition from firing.

treat a Polaris electrical box like a live grenade, where mistakes can be very costly.

I had an 94 SL 750 pull into the shop yesterday..uberly mint, but the owner grounded the battery on the electric box and the entire harness let go of it's magic smoke. It can happen that fast.

between the labor and parts, I told him to junk the ski, unless he wanted to go for $750+..and time since you cannot just order a new cdi (discontinued)

you need to study up on Polaris ignition folklore, as there are a few variants on the ignition system and you have to make sure the box you buy is the correct one

Damn! I was hoping for some good news.

Reprinted the whole machine. Seat redone. Engine rebuilt. Got everything working and make this mistake. Machine looks better than new.

Checked eBay...yikes! This is a costly error.

    Quick question... I hope!

Are all 3 coils supposed to fire simultaneously? And does the CDI have a rev limiter?

All 3 coils do fire at the same time. The CDI does have a rev limiter, around 6700 RPM.
