I don't think it is needed. I have a theory, but there is no good way to test this theory. The OEM gaskets are coated with a rubber-like product. Anyone who has worked on these engines knows that this coating sticks to the head and block and sometimes can be a bitch to remove. I believe that the objective is to get this coating to stick as good as it possible can. This means cleaning the head and block religiously of any traces of oil with solvent, because oil will keep the rubber from sticking well. Also, this means not touching the OEM gasket with your oily fingers. How many guys actually do this, other than me?

Sea dood is correct clean the head and block with some brake clean and put it on. Just think your last gasket had copper spray and it failed.

MLS gaskets require very smooth and clean surface to seal well. The better the surface RA, the better.
