    Vertical Play in Handlebar(VXR)

    Hi all.... I have a 2012 VXR and have noticed some vertical play in the handlebar that I don't remember being there before. If I grab the handlebars and pull straight up, they "pop" upwards about a 1/16". They then go right back down as soon as I release them. I put my hand on the bottom of the steering column(where the steering cable connects) and it too moves up and down when I pull up on the bars. This tells me that the entire steering column moves up and down. Is this normal? I don't have very many hours on it, but don't remember it doing this before. Can someone with a VXR check theirs and see if you have the same thing? Anyone know if there is a simple fix? Thanks in advance....

    Mine has it too...figured just normal unless I hear otherwise...33 hrs 2012

    I wouldn't be concerned about it if it wasn't so annoying. Every time I lay into the throttle, or hit a wave.....it pops up and pops down. It's not much movement, but you can feel it every time it does it.

    Hmmmm...This isnt what I wanted to hear. Maybe someone familiar with the steering assemblies on these can chime in on what would cause this or how to fix it.

    if you look at the parts diagram there appears to be a collar on the bottom of the steering stem. I would start with loosening it and pushing it up all the way (may need someone pushing down on bars at the same time) than tighten it back up. If that does not work I would measure the OD of the stem and order a Teflon washer to put in there.

    Mine has a small amount of play as well. Never made much of it though...

    Seems that collar doesn't turn with the steering, as there is a bolt on the back right to keep it stationary. So the steering shaft has to turn inside of it. Wouldn't tightening down on this too much eventually lock the steering? Or am I looking at it wrong?

    Couple things:

    1. Seems that collar does turn with the steering as the bolt on the back is not a mounting bolt, it's where the steering cable mounts.

    2. Local dealer has 2 2012 VXRs still on the lot, so I checked both of them, and not a millimeter of play in either one. So for those of you having this problem, the collar is obviously coming loose. Not sure if it wasn't tightened enough at the factory, or even if I tighten it if the problem will continue to re-occur.

    So my next question is, what is involved in getting to this collar showed in the diagram linked by r33pwrd? I don't have the waverunner in front of me, so can anyone tell me what needs to be taken off to get to it?
