    98 SLTH Exhaust Cooling Issue

I've been working on my brother's 98 SLTH trying to get it up and running 100% and have been getting stuck with a cooling issue (I think) of some sort. When riding it, the top of the exhaust pipe is always cool and the bottom is hot. The rear U shaped rubber tube that runs from the waterbox to the through-hull exit feels hotter than I would expect as well. It doesn't burn you but is certainly unfomfortable to hold on to for more than a couple seconds.

As far as I can tell all of the water passage ways are clear and we tried removing the t-stat with no cange in operation. The water pop-off is in place and had a rock in it holding it shut. This has now been resolved and when it was fixed it didn't seem to make much difference.

Overall the ski runs fairly well but feels rich throughout the powerband. Piston wash indicates that the top-end is rich as well. It also gains RPM's when making right hand turns so I suspect perhaps the cooling issue may be throwing off the exhaust flow/power band.

I'm not really sure what else to check from here to get this thing going 100%. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Pump screen is in place and clear as well as the water-tube into the hull.

Remove and clean the exhaust water injection; clean the mesh filter screen and clean the injection orifice. Both are on the exhaust pipe.

Look at the online parts diagram to locate on your engine.

Or just look for a small diameter water hose that has both ends connected to the exhaust water jacket.

I forgot to add that I pulled the screen/orifice assembly and it was clean and there were no obstructions. The tube running down is also clear as well as the lower orifice. If I pull the rubber hose with it idling I get water out coming out.

It looks like they would be parts 8 and 10 based on the diagram.

You cleaned the metal fittings at both ends of that small hose?

I removed and cleaned the top one and all was fine. I assumed that the bottom one was just an open orifice with no screen and did not remove it but rather used a small allen wrench to make sure it was clear of any obstructions. Should I have removed that lower one to inspect it? Is there a screen on that one too?

Ok so that should be fine then. If that's the case then what else could cause the top of the pipe to remain cool/cold under operation and the rear pipe (tube exiting waterbox) to get hot?
