Local guy drowns trying to cross a dam.

This is 2 guys close to where I live. It's a good reminder why you don't ignore the warning signs near dams. Your ski is not more powerful than the river. Be careful this summer. http://wqad.com/2013/07/07/one-dead-...on-rock-river/

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said both men were operating in an area between the dam and buoys marked “No Boats.” A statement from the DNR said witnesses reported the men made the ride downstream over the dam, and they were trying to go back upstream over the dam when Ekin was ejected from his jet ski at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2013.

That’s when 42-year-old Anthony Sovey, also of Cambridge, tried to rescue Ekin from the turbulent water below the dam. Sovey was thrown from his jet ski and was able to cling to a partially-submerged tree until he was rescued.
When that fast moving water catches the nose of the ski it probably stopped the forward motion and drove the nose downward into the water. Instant ejection...

Sucks for sure but the laws and buoys/markers are not suggestions.

...prob. a combination of poor judgement, bad luck, and physics. And there was also the two skiers that were killed this weekend in NY: Borrowed ski, male driver, female hanging on - operating at night and w/no PFDs. Not much later, two bodies pulled out of the water. Tragedy born from stupidity, that one.

Did you see the video on KWQC? The water was incredibly fast and rough. No one in their right mind should have been riding in water like that, much less attempting to ride over a steel dam. I wouldn't even take my boat through water like that. Its a recipe for disaster on all fronts. Its too bad those guys had to learn the hard way.

The article I don't think mentioned it, but both the rock and Mississippi rivers have been flooded recently, so there is/was a lot more water moving than normal.

Hello btw, I'm a new jet ski owner out of the Quad Cities myself, though I ride 1 pool north up by Princeton beach.

Welcome to the 'hulk. BTW, a couple of your neighbors just made a PWC trip from Moline, IL to Mobile, AL - about 1300 miles or so. Epic.

My apologies to the OP for going off topic - back to the bad luck and stupidity discussion...
