One plug completely black, one white/tannish

So i'm getting ready to do the compression test as soon as the battery charges up. I pulled both spark plugs and the rear plug is black and the front is whitish/tan. This is on a '97 SLT 700. What would be your first impression of these indications?

    Thanks.
