    1997 sl 1050 no spark...

I picked up a used 1997 sl 1050 with no compression on PTO... would start but definitely was not right... pulled it apart found upper ring wiped out and piston toast , cyl not that bad, removed engine ...got new piston and rings , touched up cyl with hone and re installed.. went over carbs, coolant system , exhaust , all good when apart... tested compression all about 120.. the problem I'm having is no spark... I triple check all my connection in the box.. that I removed...good.. I tested the batt.. even tried it on the charger.. going to check with my multimeter the volts when cranking.. according to the mfd its good well above 10.6.. just wonder what thoughts are before i start testing the coil or cdi

Thanks for any help you can give

Hold down the Bilge button while cranking. See if you get spark.

Battery must deliver well over 10.6 volts.

Is there corrosion or goop on one of the Red/Purple wire ends? Hard to tell from the photo, but one of the spade connectors looks different at the crimp end.

the silicone on the coil has me concerned....also one of those wires has been spliced. atleast one...with the what i see as rust in the box...im wondering if water got into the coil? that would explain the non factory silicone on that one end of it..and could very well explain your lack of spark.

the goop on the red and purple wire looks like liquid electrical tape.. and the silicone has me wondering as well... but what bugs me is that it was running on 2 cyl before the tear down

Those CDI's had a habit of not waking up, there is a service message to disconnect the red/pur from CDI-install a jumper wire and connect it to the Orange terminals.Make sure you have over 10.6 on the orange when cranking.

I have seen these CDI not wake up even on just the second attempt to crank-you can verify this by disconnecting and reconnecting the red/pur wire.
When the CDI is awake you will see around 8 volts on the brown CDI wire going to the stator.
