Impeller Issues, I think.
Good Morning, I have two 1997 Yamaha GP1200s. My ski takes of slow but once at top speed runs like a scalded dog. However sometimes at high speed the impeller sounds like it is slipping, the engine revs high but there is no thrust. After I let off the throttle and the ski settles in the water I have to ease on the throttle back to top speed before the same problem occurs again. I think I am getting cavitation but am not sure. Any suggestions? When it does feel like the impeller is slipping there is a weird sound almost like ball bearings being shaken in a can, a metal rattle if you will. Any help would be much appreciated.

Definitely sounds like it could be slipping/cavitating. Measure the impeller to wear ring clearance with a feeler gauge. If that's ok, then seal the pump up so it can't suck in air.
