HELP!! 2005 RXT Green Hulk supercharger impeller had catastropic failure

I was troubleshooting the loss of RPMs at full throttle (only hitting about 6300 at full throttle). I decided to pull the supercharger to send back in to Jerry to have him inspect and change the washers again if they were worn (slipping) and change the bearings since the supercharge is out.

    I wasn't expecting this!!

The green hulk supercharger was installed at approx 25hrs (2-3 yrs ago) and the ski has approx 95hrs on it now. I have the following mods:

    Greenhulk supercharge impeller
    Riva Power intake
    Riva blow off valve
    Stainless wear ring
    SS impeller (14/19R)
    Intake grate

I'm going to try to give Jerry a call to see what, if anything, he can do for me. I don't know if the supercharger impeller carries a warranty but I wouldn't expect to see this type of failure unless it was defective small crack/defect in the casting or it was damaged during installation (small stress fracture that caused the wheel to come apart over time).

I ride most of the time in the ocean and I don't beat my ski. It beats me!!

The purpose of this post is not to blame anyone or anything but just to get information out there to help others and to also find out if anyone else has experienced this type of failure with the greenhulk supercharger impeller?

Did you not change the washers at 75 hours (50 hours use)? Have you ever checked the slip on it since the rebuild? These are both maintenance issues that should always be performed on these SCs. You can't just gas n go with these. Sorry for your bad luck.

And never heard of a Greenhulk charger either......

Have you disassembled the SC to see what failed? SC wheels dont usually fail. Normally something else, bearings, shaft, clutches fail, but not the wheel.

Checkin' slip is like changing oil. If you forget either, the engine will start a one-way conversation with your wallet.

    I'm guessing that's a Vortech Gen 1 wheel.

looks like water or solid material ingestion based failure

    Thanks for all the comments!!

No, i didn't pull the SC out at 50hrs to check for slippage. I wouldn't expect a slipping SC from worn washers to cause the SC wheel to come apart the way it did. Also, the loss of RPMs was sudden and it wasn't like there was RPM loss over time as the washers started to wear. I'm not an expert on these ski's so please take my comments as only my opinion. However, i used to work on turbine aircraft and have seen pictures of turbine wheels explode and this looks somewhat similar. From my experience from seeing turbine and compressor failures on aircraft they were caused from small defects (or corrosion) in the turbine/compressor wheel that migrated into a bigger crack until they exploded. That's why at a certain number of hours the turbine and compressor wheels have to be removed and checked for cracks. I'm kinda wondering if corrosion could have played into?

I don't ride in heavy surf conditions and my intake is clean so i don't know how foreign debris water ingestion could have caused this.

Yes, when i purchased this wheel i believe it was called the "green charger". However, I need to dig out the paperwork.

Again, thanks for all the responses! Now, it's about getting it fixed and back on the water!

Yes there was a charger called a Greenwheel, back in the day before Jerry decided to have Riva market it as the Gen ll wheel.......When a wheel explodes like this and the bearings and shaft are in tacked it is usually from debris or water entering the front of the Scer..this little wheel is spinning in access of 40,000 + Rpms, drop something small,or big for that matter in front of it and watch what happens...

Question is, we're are all the pieces? Jammed in the intercooler?

Going to have to find all the bits, probably going to have to pull the intake, pull the intercooler, clean everything out.
