As the exhaust gas exits the head into the manifold, it has to do a 90 degree turn. The torque plate moves this 90 degree turn further away and helps gas flow. It will raise your RPM by 100 / 150 ish in doing so.
It also helps to keep the crowns of the pistons cooler.
There are not many other $100 mods that give you an RPM increase of 100+

I have seen a consistant 80 to 110 RPMs and as snowman said--depending on weather conditions. Very cheap mod for the results. I already had my engine out when I installed it. Would hate to think of trying to do the install with the engine in the boat.
