    Domestic Bendix Spring and Bushing

    Dammit.

Why do they have this on the Domestics (I'm assuming to control end play on the bendix)? I haven't dealt with it before - all of my full rebuilds/stator changes have been Fujis - and I left it off of the 1200 after putting the stator in - guess I'm gonna have to pull it back apart.

    Uggh.

    No real question here....just venting.

At least you know it needs to be installed. Often those pieces drop into the hull when the cover is removed and nobody notices ...

I really think you could get away without them. They only really put a slight pressure on the shaft, the shoulder on the bendix and the boss in the housing work the same a the fuji. Someone I talked to on here that does alot of red motors says they never run them & without problems.

I too am in the unsure camp... unsure if I have one. When I rebuilt my 1200... I replaced the front mag cover with a different one with the water cooling jacket on it. During disassembly and reassembly, I never noticed the little bushing and spring in the bendix hole... so I never thought to see if the new cover had one in that hole. Wasn't until later, after the engine was in the boat, that I was looking over the original mag cover and saw the bushing and spring and took them out. So... no telling if I have one for sure... probably not.

Aren't the bendix themselves the same from fuji to domestic? I was under the impression they were the same part. If so, why would you need the bushing and spring on the domestics but not the fujis?

    Cheers!

Perhaps to keep the Bendix from vibrating out of position or preventing bushing wear from jiggling around while the engine is running

How much fore and aft play is there in the domestic Bendix configuration compared to the Fuji engine? Maybe the Bendix is the same but the end points in the housing may not have quite the same distance apart?
