1996 polaris 780 xl blown motor need advise/ input

I recently bought a 1996 polaris 780 sl with a double trailer. I have torn the motor down and found I lost the PTO side connecting rod and bearing, the needles from the bearing bounced around on top of the piston and pitted everything up. I am looking for advise/ parts to do one of the following:

1 rebuild my motor. I would need crank, jug, 2 pistons. and gasket set (about $700-$800 on ebay)
2 Buy a used 750 motor for $300 and swap motors
3 Get a reman motor from SBT for $700
4 Part out jet ski and sell trailer and find another project
5 Hope someone here has a used 780 that runs to sell me

I can do the engine work myself ( I have been reading the great forums on here) Just looking for advise on where to start.
    Thanks for your input!

    Jason

Welcome to the Hulk! Looks like you have figured out all of your options. The only one you missed was to find another blown up ski with a 780 to get parts from. I personally prefer the fix it yourself approach as you will then learn all the steps it takes to do the work yourself and know how to diagnose future problems. Any way you look at it, you are also going to need to update your entire fuel system and rebuild the carbs which will run you another $200-250...... The only scary part about buying a used motor is you just don't really know what you are getting.

There is also a noticeable difference in power and acceleration between the 750 and 780 motors.....

If I were to put in a 750 motor. Can i just change the stator and flywheel from the 780 and keep the electronics box that is in the 780 ski? DO I need the prop from the 750 or will the 780 one work? What other parts would I need? I am hoping I would get the complete 750 motor with carbs to exhaust

Rebuild what you have. Get a rebuilt crank, a top end kit and have all 3 cylinders bored. You will have a brand new motor that will last for years if you take care of it.

If the other 2 cylinders are in good shape( hone and fresh rings) I have a couple real nice used cranks and cylinders as well as heads I would sell reasonable

You can use the flywheel, stator, and full electronics box from a 780 on a 750 motor. You would need to change out the impeller though as the SL780s prop is likely to be too aggressive for a 750.
