    Voltage Regulator or Stator??

I am getting the "12 volt low" code. I have done the following tests:

Battery connections are tight, fuses are good. Voltmeter shows about 12 volts with the engine not running, then shows the same with the engine running. Voltmeter needle does not move when I rev the engine. This suggests that the engine is not charging the battery.

How can I determine if I have a bad voltage regulator or a bad stator?

I too have been going through same issue except on start up voltage drops and does not recover. Battery died last season so I replaced battery and checked the same as you have. Fortunately I had a regulator I could barrow to test. That would be cheapest and easiest route I'd assume is if you could barrow one from a near by member or someone else who has a seadoo. Its just a quick plug and play test. Unfortunately for me the regulator gave me same results so now I'm onto removing pto to get to stator. I had metal washers pop a few years ago and obviously I did not do a good enough job cleaning. Or so I hope thats the issue.

Do you have a shop manual? May be helpful.

I have a spare regulator if you want to try it.

given that a spare regualtor isn't a bad investment ( since it can save a weekend for you or somebody you are with, go with that first. Most common fault. Changing the staor is far more complicated and costly. As an FYI, in five years of servicing skis, I've changed one seadoo 4-tec stator..and that one was damaged by a broekn flywheel bolt.

At last look, I've installed 23 regualtors in five years.

make sure the battery is fully charged before doing any tests. Quickest way to fry a regualtor is to ask it to charge a battery that is close to dead..and that happens the instand you take off the jumper cables ( which should not be used except in the cae of a dire emergency)

Thanks guys This is very helpful information. I'll borrrow a VR and try that next. I hope it is not the stator.

Question to nmpeter - will it hurt the VR to charge the battery with a 4 amp charger without disconnecting the cables first?

best practice is to remove one of the battery cables. You do not want to spike the electrical system.

4 amp is doable ( if it is a quality charger) , but 1-2 amp better for the battery.
